The Pearisburg Community Market is offering a new free program for kid’s ages 5-12 called the Sprouts Market Club. Opening on May 21,  the market’s youngest patrons will learn about local foods, gardening and more through their participation in club activities at the market on Saturday mornings between 10-noon.

Kids can look forward to a different market activity each week which may include cooking with Chef Kate at the Farm Table; learning about  different fruits and vegetables with local vendors and Matthew Bowman, Market Site Manager; doing food themes crafts and planting activities with the Master Gardeners and Beverly Boehm, the Kids at the Market Art Program Organizer.

The Sprouts’ Market Club is free! Parents can sign up their kids at the first Sprouts Market Club activity on May 21 at the Manager’s information booth or they can contact Matthew Bowman at his email address, marketmgr@pearisburg.org, to begin later in the season. The program will run each Saturday the market is open throughout the market season. Each young person enrolled as a  “Sprouts Market Club Member” can begin the fun activities right away.

“Our mission is to educate and inspire children to take part in their local food system, enjoy eating nutritious foods and empower them to make healthy choices.  The market will provide kids the opportunity to participate in activities that will allow them to engage with local farmers and provide them with a better understanding about where their food comes from. We are excited to work with our local children to introduce them to local food, farming, and healthy eating through the Sprouts Market Club,” stated Dianne Dinger on behalf of the Market team.

When asked what kids can expect on May 21, Bowman stated, “Kids participating in the program will be given a reusable Sprouts Shopping Bag for weekly purchases. Each week the kids will be given two special tokens each worth $1 to spend on fresh fruits & vegetables or plants that produce food at the market. Kids will then tour the market vendor booths with me to meet local producers and purchase fresh fruits and vegetables or plants that produce vegetables with the tokens provided. Upon conclusion of the tour, Sprouts Club members will participate in a final activity that centers on food, nutrition and the food system. On May 21, the Master Gardeners and the Market’s Kids Art Program Organizer will conduct a planting activity.

Parents are invited to participate with their kids or enjoy breakfast or lunch at the Farm Table and shop with local vendors during the Sprout Club program hours.

The Pearisburg Community Market is located on 1410 Wenonah Avenue. It is open on Saturdays from 8:30am-1:00pm and on the third Thursday of each month, June- October, from 5:00-8:30pm.
