CodeRED Giles County
Giles County Sheriff’s Department in conjunction with Giles County Administration introduced the CodeRed Emergency Notification System to the citizens of Giles County 13 years ago. This notification system has proven to be a successful tool in notifying citizens of emergency situations affecting the area in which they live such as potential flooding, power outages, unsafe emergency situations, and emergency situations at the schools.
For those of you who have not heard of this system or are new to Giles County, “Code Red” is a high-speed telephone emergency notification system. The CodeRed system gives the County officials the ability to deliver pre-recorded telephone notification/information messages to targeted areas or the entire County at a rate of up to 60,000 calls per hour.
CodeRed system is a geographical based notification system, which means street addresses are needed to select which phone numbers will receive emergency notification calls in any given situation. The system works great with cell phones too, but we have to have the street address. People who have recently moved but kept the same listed or unlisted phone number also need to change their address in the database.
First, you can personally create a free log-in to the CodeRed database. This will allow you to change your address and phone numbers. Secondly, you will know the call is from CodeRed when the number displayed on your caller ID shows CODERED 866-419-5000. For cell phones, you can save the number in your contacts under CODERED so it will be displayed as well. If you would like to hear the last message delivered to your phone, simply dial the number back. When you enroll, you can elect to receive alerts also by text message and/or e-mail.
We urge all individuals and businesses to log into the County’s website, www.virginiasmountainplayground.com, and click on the CodeRed icon to register.
Those without Internet access may call Jon Butler at the Giles County Administration Office 540-921 2525, Monday through Friday, (8am-4pm) to give their information over the phone for enrollment. Required information includes first and last name, street address (physical address, no P. O. boxes), city, state, zip code, and phone numbers to register (you can register cell phones and residential phones).
YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION REMAINS PRIVATE AND WILL ONLY BE USED FOR EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION! Questions regarding this system should be directed to Lt. S. K. Vaughn at 540-921-3842 or Jon Butler at 540-921-2525.
