Communities of the New

Kick-started by a Virginia Main Street grant awarded to the Town of Narrows, the Communities of the New River Valley, program aims to foster cooperation among and coordinate marketing of our local communities and beyond. Starting with the five towns of Giles County, communities along the New River are pursuing designation as “Communities of the New”, granting them access to new branding material, resources, and more. To achieve designation, the towns have completed self-assessments to inform strategies, and will be taking steps to connect with regional organizations, support and promote local businesses, and coordinate with each other.

The program has been administered by William Jones, a recent graduate of Virginia Tech, under the guidance of the New River Valley Regional Commission’s Patrick O’Brien and the Giles County Director of Tourism & Marketing, Cora Gnegy. If you would like to know more about the Communities of the New program or have any input, please reach out to us by email ( A public launch is anticipated for the summer of 2019.
