Do you need a summer treat to beat the heat? Don’t we all! Giles County has some spectacular places to grab just that… With the summer days playing, and much hotter weather, everyone needs to stay cool. Here are some of the few places you may be able to stop by!
Dairy Queen | Enjoy a blizzard on a hot day? Well, if you’re in the Pearisburg or Rich Creek area, you’re in luck. Stop by the local Dairy Queen to grab you a blizzard. If blizzards aren’t your style, there are even more options to eat and enjoy.
Angels Rest Hike– with access off of Cross Ave, Angels Rest is a ~3 miles out-and-back hike that takes you to the Pearis Mountain overlook. You’ll be able to see the Dairy Queen roof in Pearisburg from your perch. Grab that treat before for motivation, or after to cool off!
Scoops | If you ever find yourself in Pembroke, stop by Scoops where you can get some nice, cold ice cream. Like playing games? If the ice cream wasn’t enough, they have a small arcade for everyone to enjoy.
Cascades Waterfall Hike– from Snidow Street, cross Rt. 460 and head to the end of Cascade Drive to the parking lot (don’t forget your $3 fee). The Cascades trail is ~4 miles round trip and you know you’ve reached the spot when the 69 foot waterfall comes into view! You could dip your toes in Stony Creek to feel the cool waters, but be extra cautious if you choose to swim.
Walker Valley Market | With a wide variety of locally made goodies can make the heat less painful with their homemade ice cream! Plus enjoy this unique gem of a shopping destination!
Southwest Driving Tour- print this off (click the link to download PDF), or have it pulled up on your phone as you make your way to the market. Stay cool in the AC of your vehicle and learn about the historic houses and churches in this part of the county.
The Palisades Restaurant | The Palisades has some great ice cream, to take the edge off the blistering heat. Get over to Eggleston and chill your palette. While there, go ahead and grab dinner too. Their seasonally themed menu has unique options to discover, plus a great wine, beer, and cocktail menu.
Mary Ingles Boat Landing– along the New River, right under the Eggleston Road bridge, you’ll find one of the New River Water Trail boat landings. This spot has plenty of parking. You can typically see Great Blue Herons, Red-tailed Hawks, and even Bald Eagles as you enjoy the river bank and picnic tables. There’s a stone monument with a little bit of history for you too!
