Serving students from Giles High School and Narrows High Schools as well as adults, the Giles County Technology Center offers a strong Career and Technical Education program that is utilized by area employers.
Works cooperatively with businesses and industries in the New River Valley, including Celanese, Fairchild International, Patrick Enterprises, Caterpillar, and 84 Lumber. 67 individuals from the business/industry community serve on technical program advisory committees assisting with program improvements, job placement for graduates and donation of tools and materials.
Dual enrollment available with New River Community College for Nursing Assistant, Machine Technology, Drafting/Pre-engineering, Computer Tech, Building Technology and Welding. Through dual enrollment courses students earned 702 college credit hours in business education, drafting, machine technology, computer systems technology, automotive technology, building technology, welding and nursing assistant programs at the Tech Center and the two high schools.
During the 2015-16 school year 344 credentialing exams were administered in grades 9 – 12 with an overall pass rate of 90% throughout the school division. In 2015-16 98% of CTE program completers, those students that completed all requirements for their CTE program and graduated from high school, earned their industry certification or state license leaving high school with a job related credential in hand.
Students participate in SkillsUSA and Health Occupations Student Association technical and leadership skills competitions at district, state and national levels. Students attending Giles County Technology Center have the opportunity to complete a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) program that combines high tech skills with strong math and science options at their high school. Coupled with dual enrollment with the New River Community College and students are able to develop an academic and career plan to chart their course toward a fulfilling career.

Two year program for students in grades 11 & 12 – 3 high school credits for first year/4 high school credits second year) The automotive service technology program provides training in the repair and troubleshooting of cars and light trucks. Students learn to use tools and equipment to diagnose and repair problems in engines, suspensions, exhaust, transmission, and electrical systems. The program at Giles Tech Center is ASE certified in 5 of 8 areas. The program is articulated with New River Community College with 4 credits awarded for AUT 101 – Introduction to Automotive Systems if the student completes the class with at least a B average and enrolls into the Automotive training program at New River Community College. Students may take the ASE certification exams after completion of the program.
NRCC Dual Enrollment – Total 9 Credit Hours (2 years)
Drafting is a career where you create drawings with dimensions so mechanical parts, welded parts, and houses can be built. Students create drawings for students in the Machine Shop, Welding, and Building Trades.
First year: First and second six weeks you will be learning terminology the basics of manual Drafting. This includes lettering, sketching, read scales, blueprint reading, line quality, neatness, and geometrical construction. By the first of December students will move into the CAD room know as (Computer-Aided Drafting). Students learn to use the software AutoCAD. This is where students will be able to apply what they have learned in manual drafting by using the computer to create drawings. Last six weeks students design a bumper system for a car to protect their driver.
Second year: Seniors will be creating a complete set of Architectural plans (House Plans) the first semester of their school year. This is done using the CAD software which is in 3D. This allows students to view their house from all angles. The software 3D Viz can be used to create a virtual walk through.
The second semester students will be using the software called Inventor, which is a 3D software to create mechanical parts. Last six weeks students design their own final project. Designs in the past have been: Robots, Catapult, Model houses, Interior Design projects, 3D Animation
Two year program for students in grade 11 & 12 – 3 high school credits first year/4 high school credits second year) The building trades program provides training in the building and repair of homes including excavation work, laying block, carpentry, electrical wiring, and plumbing. Students gain hands on experience through the modular home building project and through senior internships with local contractors. Students may take the NCCER Construction Fundamentals Certification exam or the NOCTI Job Ready assessment at the completion of the program.
Cosmetology is a two year program for students in grades 11 and 12. Students receive 3 high school credits for the first year and 4 high school credits for the second year. Cosmetology is the study of the hair, skin, and nails. The cosmetology program prepares students for state licensing as cosmetologists. Instruction includes, hair styling techniques, hair cutting, permanent waving and chemical straightening, hair coloring and hair lightening, nail technology, skin aesthetics and makeup techniques, scalp and hair care. Professional ethics, beauty salon management, customer relations and retailing are also covered. Upon completing the program students will be required to take the Virginia State Board of Cosmetology licensing exam.
Two year program for students in grades 11 & 12 – 3 high school credits first year/4 high school credits second year.) The machine technology program provides training in the use of lathes, milling machines, surface grinders and layout tools for the shaping of metals into machine parts. Students also gain experience in CNC programming and mechanical blueprint reading and sketching. The program is articulated with New River Community College with 9 credits awarded for MAC 106 – Machine Shop Operations if the student completes the class with at least a B average and enrolls into the Machine Technology program at New River Community College. Students may take the National Institute for Metalworking Skills Level 1 Drill Press and Measurement, Safety and Materials exam.
Two year program for students in grades 11 & 12 – 3 high school credits for first year / 4 high school credits second year.) This is a dual enrollment program with New River Community College (ITN 107 – Personal Computer Hardware & Troubleshooting for 4 credits and ITN 106 – Microcomputer Operating Systems for 4 credits). Students learn to construct, troubleshoot, service, and repair computer systems, related components and software, and install and maintain local area networks. Completion of this program prepares students for the A+ certification exam. Students are also offered ITN 101-Introduction to Network Concepts. This is a 4 credit hour dual enrolled NRCC class that prepares students for the Network + Certification.
Two year program for students in grades 11 & 12 – 3 high school credits first year/4 high school credits second year.) This program provides training in the use of oxy-acetylene, arc, MIG and TIG welding equipment and practices to shape and form metal. Students will develop skill in fabrication of metals according to diagrams, blueprints, or written specifications. The program is dual enrolled with New River Community College with 4 credits awarded for WEL 100 & WEL 123 if the student completes the class with at least a B average and enrolls into the Welding Technology program at New River Community College. Students may take the SkillsUSA Workforce Ready Welding Assessment at the end of the program.
One year program for students in either grade 11 or 12 – 3 high school credits.) The nursing assistant program provides training in the care of patient needs, taking and recording vital signs, CPR training, bathing, feeding and caring for the sick and aged. Students that are eligible must take the state competency exam after successful completion of this program. The Nursing Assistant program can be completed in 1 year and meets the first 3 class periods of the day.
