Mill Creek | Iron Skillet

Mill Creek Nature Park is 140+ acres adjoining the Town of Narrows and Jefferson National Forest. This property offers miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, beautiful waterfalls, and fishing for native trout in a pristine mountain streams. The park has a small picnic shelter as well as a hiker shelter near the reservoir. This area has multiple trails to discover. The waterfall trail meanders alongside the creek and through thickets. The waterfalls created a natural ledge to step onto and view this wonder at a new perspective. Visit their website for maps and specific directions to the parking area. Post hikes or rides enjoy the Iron Skillet. Located in downtown Narrows and open for lunch or dinner this local spot offers smoked BBQ, sandwiches, fresh made sides, and weekly specials! Visit their Facebook page for regular updates on what’s in the smoker that day so you don’t miss out on ribs, chicken, turkey, smoked bologna, or pulled pork.

Angels Rest | La Barranca Mexican Grill

Angels Rest is a section hike along the Appalachian Trail. This 1.5 mile hike provides a scenic overlook of Pearisburg and the New River. Parking can be found at the Pearis Cemetery trailhead. While up at the overlook you might notice a brightly painted building putting off serious good energies- that’s La Barranca! La Barranca Mexican Grill has space for the whole crew. A bar area with pool table, outdoor dining, and a lively dining room with fresh made local favorites to enjoy!

Cascades Waterfall | Tangent Outfitters & Cascades Café

The Cascades waterfall is a 4-mile round trip moderate hike. The Upper or Lower trail provide different levels of difficulty for your outing, alongside a native fishery. The 69 foot waterfall cuts through the gorge creating a powerful landscape. Whether it is a tank refill on the car or your person, Tangent Outfitters located on Route 460 at the end of Cascade Drive makes it easy to stock up pre or post adventure.

Bald Knob | Stony Creek Tavern at Mountain Lake Lodge

A trek to the highest peak in Giles isn’t as dramatic as it sounds- but the rock outcropping you land at is magnificently breathtaking. Parking for the trail can be at the Giles County Trail Center and extends .8 one-way, up the mountain, over rocky and steep sections, but worth the effort. With an almost perfect 360° view of the entire New River Valley this hike is perfect any time of year. Bring a headlight if you’re going to catch sunset. Pull up a stool or crash into a cozy couch at Stony Creek Tavern for libations and a meal. Located inside the historic stone lodge at Mountain Lake Lodge, it’s open daily to the public.

New River Water Trail | The Palisades Restaurant

We have 37 miles of the New River coursing  through Giles, near the ‘start’ of the county around Eggleston proves to be a good fishing spot, wildlife viewing spot, or as the weather permits a river access point for all sorts of watercraft. Find gear, rentals, and advice from any of our Outfitters and Guides. If you plan to put in or take out at the Ingles Landings along the New River Water Trail, just know you’re very close to The Palisades Restaurant. The Palisades is open for dinner and features contemporary Appalachian cuisine, which translates to a wonderful meal, that’s easy to appreciate, with a flair for fancy. There’s a bar option as well and reservations are recommended. Check out their stage area for live music every weekend.
