JBR Vineyards – First In Giles – Is Expanding
JBR Vineyards LLC planted the first vineyard in Giles County, Virginia in 2006, with a replanting occurring in 2009. Two varieties of classic wine grapes (vitis vinifera) are exclusively grown: Pinot Noir for red wine and Riesling for white wine. By 2013, the vineyard had reached full production.
Also in 2013, Jessee Ring and Debby Ring (Owners) made a strategic decision to become licensed as a Virginia Farm Winery so that they could sell the wine. This very significant milestone came to fruition on Nov. 24, 2014, making JBR Vineyards & Winery the first Virginia Farm Winery whose operation included a vineyard in Giles County. The first bottle of wine from the Giles County vineyard was sold on May 28, 2015.
Now, an expansion of the Giles vineyard is underway.
A site with Southwest exposure across the road from the existing vineyard was selected in the summer of 2015. The work of clearing and cleaning up the field, including removal of an ancient barn, took place this winter. In March, the vine rows will be laid out. Planting stock (600 Riesling dormant root stock) from a nursery in New York State will arrive mid-April, with the actual planting taking place shortly thereafter.
Four years will be needed to get the new vines fully established and producing.
This vineyard expansion will necessitate an upgrade to the winemaking facilities, either in the form of a completely new building or renovations to an existing building. Plans for this are in process.
