Here in Virginia’s Mountain Playground, we’re lucky to have a strong network of parks and recreational spaces that make life better for all of us. Many of these places have been improved in recent years thanks to the continued support of the Mary Moody Northen Endowment.
The Endowment carries forward the values of its namesake, Mary Moody Northen, by supporting projects that strengthen communities. Right here at home, the Endowment owns Mountain Lake Lodge, an important part of our local economy that also welcomes visitors from near and far to experience everything Giles County has to offer.
Since 2021 the Endowment has contributed nearly $400,000.00 to Giles communities and recreation facilities. Through both funding and hands‑on support, the Endowment has helped bring several local recreation projects to life. A few examples include:
- Newport: Older tennis courts were converted into four new pickleball courts at Newport Ruritan Park
- Pembroke: Underused tennis courts became eight pickleball courts at Castle Rock Golf & Recreation
- Pearisburg: The community basketball court at the Pearisburg Community Center was redeveloped
- Rich Creek: Four new pickleball courts were installed at Woodland Park
These improvements are just one part of the long story of Mountain Lake Lodge, which continues to play a meaningful role in our region. Each year, more than 56,000 unique visitors come to stay at the historic stone lodge and cabins. From seasonal events to family‑ and pet‑friendly activities, Mountain Lake offers plenty of ways to spend time outdoors and enjoy the beauty of our mountains. In the past year alone, guests from all 48 continental states have made their way here.
Many visitors also come because of Dirty Dancing, which was filmed on the property. The movie continues to bring fans from around the world who want to experience the setting that inspired its story. Dirty Dancing weekends are scheduled throughout the year and they annually host the Dirty Dancing Festival, this year on August 15.
For generations, residents of Giles County have benefited from the support of the Mary Moody Northen Endowment and Mountain Lake Lodge. It’s something our community doesn’t take for granted. We look forward to many more opportunities to gather, celebrate, and enjoy time together up on the mountain.
