The Giles County Public Service Authority was formed in 1997. It has five incorporated Towns and the County as its members. The Authority has two main functions. The production of wholesale water to its members and solid waste collection services. The production of water is accomplished by utilizing the main well at the water treatment plant and Well #4. These two sources are capable of producing over two million gallons per day. The water treatment plant is a state of the art filtration plant built in the late 90’s. Over 75% of the inhabited structures in the County are supplied by public water. Four Towns and the County provide retail distribution of water to the end user (County operates Glen Lyn system). The PSA have executed a Capital Improvement Plan and Asset Management Plan. At present the Authority operates four manned convenience centers at Lurich, Newport, Pembroke and Route 100 near Pearisburg. Solid waste services include door to door pickup weekly. Without a lengthy discussion the water system extends from almost the Craig County line along 42 to the western edge of Glen Lyn at the WV border.
