The recent snowfall, sleet, & extreme cold have created a dangerous ice layer on the snow that’s nearly impossible to walk on or remove. Just yesterday, the County received nine EMS calls for individuals that had significant injuries as a result of falling. We are urging individuals with mobility issues or health concerns that have not cleared walks or driveways, to stay indoors.

With additional snow forecasted this weekend, we understand that this is a very long period of time for individuals to be isolated. In attempting to accurately assess the needs in the community we are requesting your help. Our Senior Check program keeps in touch with older adults in our community. We’re already reaching out to those we know need help, but the list changes often.

If you know someone who could use a little extra care, please let us know. Please contact our office at 540-921-2525 if you have neighbors, friends, or family, that should be added to this list. Also, if you have neighbors that haven’t been out of their homes over the past week, please reach out and see if you can help.

If the current forecast holds, travel will be very difficult for the next week, further exasperating this situation.  Below are a list of questions that we are asking those on the Senior Check list and is a great starting place when talking to neighbors.

  1. Do you have any critical prescriptions, medications, or oxygen, that you are out of, or will run out of in the next week?
  2. Do you have any critical medical appointments over the next week?  Dialysis, respiratory therapy, long standing major medical appointments, etc.
  3. Is your heat working and what is your heat source?  Is it electric heat, oil furnace, propane, natural gas, etc?
  4. Is your water source still working?
  5. Do you have enough food in your home for the next seven days?  If not, what is needed?
  6. Do you have any other critical needs?
