The Palisades Restaurant Seeks Community Mementos to Celebrate 100 Years of Historic Pyne’s General Store Building

Eggleston, Va. (March 2026) — The Palisades Restaurant is inviting the community to help commemorate a century of local history by contributing photographs, newspaper articles and memorabilia from Giles County, Virginia, with a special focus on the village of Eggleston, for a 100th anniversary celebration honoring the historic Q.M. Pyne’s Store building.

The building, which houses The Palisades Restaurant, turns 100 this year and is listed on both the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register. To mark the milestone, the restaurant will host a community celebration on June 20, 2026, featuring displays of historical items and storytelling from local historians who will share the rich history of the building and surrounding area.

Originally constructed in 1926, the three-story brick structure began as a general store offering a wide array of goods to the rural community. In 1929, a two-story addition was built to house a Chevrolet dealership and auto repair shop. Designed in the Commercial Style popular at the time, the building stands today, along with a nearby former bank, as one of the only two surviving structures from what was once a bustling Appalachian commercial center in Eggleston. Its durable construction and adaptable design have allowed it to serve generations in a variety of roles, making it one of the most notable and well-preserved historic general stores in the region.

“This celebration is really about the community,” said Shaena Muldoon, owner and manager of the Palisades Restaurant. “The building has been part of people’s lives for generations, and we want to honor those stories by bringing them together in one place.”

Community members are encouraged to submit items spanning the past 100 years. Submissions should be sent in care of Shaena Muldoon at 168 Village Street, Eggleston, VA 24086. All items will be carefully returned unless donors choose to contribute them permanently to the restaurant’s growing collection. Over the past 17 years, patrons and neighbors have donated antiques and artifacts that now line the shelves of the main dining room, transforming the space into a living archive of local history. From vintage canned goods and antique tools to old photographs, soda bottles, toys, and a classic red wagon, each item reflects the deep connection between the restaurant and the community it serves.

The June 20 event will offer guests the opportunity to explore the curated collection, connect with local historians, and celebrate a century of history in a space that continues to bring people together.
